 Many web designers use search engine optimization (SEO) best practices when designing websites but oftentimes the web development job stops after the website is launched.  Search Engine Marketing (SEM) refers to all the strategies used to improve search engine ranking beyond the normal optimization of individual pages.

SEM is a term not as frequently used but it’s very important because any website owner that’s serious about improving their search engine ranking may need to regularly review and tweak web pages, keywords and content.  SEM may be part of a bigger package offered by a web designer that includes SEO.  SEO on the other hand does not include SEM.

SEM is an umbrella term and might include a campaign to build inbound links (very important) or a directory submission campaign. It could include a article writing and submission strategy or an adwords campaign.  Ultimately SEO and SEM are crucial to ranking your site on top!
